Where's the bread?
I use this recipe all the time to complement any meal where you would like some fresh
bread at the table but don’t want to spend the day making it.
Hot Biscuits in a Hurry, from Ginger Tea Makes Friends, James Barber
Mix Dry: 2 cups flour add 1 teaspoon salt,
1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, then add one cup sour cream.
Stir it to soft dough. Pat out on floured board to ¾ “ thick and cut into
rounds with a glass. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes on greased baking pan. Eat
immediately and gluttonously with lots of butter, or honey or raspberry jam, or
maple syrup. WARNING: highly addictive, produces fatness and happiness, plus
unexpected visitors.
Zwieback:
2 cups milk
1 cup butter room temp.
1 package yeast
½ cup lukewarm water
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
6 cups flour
Dissolve 1 package of yeast in the lukewarm
water, and 1 tsp. sugar and let rise. Scald milk and cool. Put milk, butter,
yeast and salt in large bowl. Beat in enough flour to make stiff batter. Add
more flour to make smooth soft dough. Knead well, cover and let rise until
double in bulk. Now form buns the size of a large walnut placing a smaller bun
on top of a larger one on a greased pan, pressing down firmly with one finger.
